Associate Professor Torpy is the Director of the Plants and Environmental Quality Group at UTS, which has become internationally recognised as the leading group involved with the study of the role of plant systems including indoor plants, green roofs and green walls, in the degradation of gaseous and particulate air pollutants, and the carbon dioxide balance of plant–microbial systems as it applies to atmospheric environments. The growing recognition of this group has resulted in a broad range of transdisciplinary, industry, local and international collaborations (Australia, PR China, South Korea, Italy, UK, USA, Hong Kong, India), along with invited keynote addresses, book chapters and editorial board memberships.
The team’s current role is focussed on the development of practical and sustainable nature-based Solutions for improving the environmental quality of urban environments worldwide, with an emphasis on the development of both small and large-scale plant-based technologies for air pollution mitigation and many other aspects of built environment sustainability. Strongly integrated goals include collaborations that lead directly to job creation, and supporting Australian industries as world leaders in green technology development.
